I'm excited to say that I have a new nonfiction book coming out in March. Here's a preview of the cover:
Here's the flap copy:
Throughout history the pattern has been the same: people create technologies for specific practical and commercial purposes, but fail to foresee their psychological, social, economic, and political impacts. We call these consequences "side effects," but they're often more profound than the intended ones.
In the past couple of decades, we have witnessed how inventions such as the internet, smartphones, and social media have contributed to major problems around the globe. At this moment, choices that will affect all of humanity are being made by a small number of unelected leaders in places like Silicon Valley, and we're poised to discover how technologies such as artificial intelligence, bioengineering, and space colonization may bring on a whole new spate of unintended results.
A "fix" can refer to a bad situation.
A "fix" can also mean a repair or cure.
Though we're often told that "You can't stop progress," we can identify powerful factors that push technologies (and technologists) in dangerous directions. And this book presents an exceptionally comprehensive array of specific things that citizens and elected officials can do to push back.
